Fight Night Derrick Lewis vs Travis Brown Post Fight

It was a fun night of fights and good finishes but maybe not the best refereeing

In the main event Derrick 'the Black Beast' Lewis went head to head with Travis 'Happa' Brown in a five round heavy weight bout. The fight didn't look like it was going to go 5 rounds by the way these guys started the fight with Lewis coming out immediately throwing a powerful left and right hook and getting caught with a good strike from Brown. Brown starts to throw kicks to the body and legs of Lewis with Lewis throwing a few of his own. Brown throws a straight kick to Lewis's body and Lewis clutches his ribs. Brown stays back because he doesn't want to use too much energy in the first round. Brown proceeds to pick apart Lewis with front and round kicks to the body and heavy leg kicks to a very hurt Lewis. Lewis throws a right hand that stuns Brown. Lewis runs at Brown and Travis hits Lewis with a knee and right hand to the body that hurts Lewis bad. Brown goes in to finish the fight but is not able to. Derrick recovers but is still hit with a few kicks before the round is over. The second round starts and Lewis is looking better but is not too aggressive. Brown sticking to his game plan continues to throw kicks to Lewis's legs for the first minute of the second round. They both close the distance and end up in the clinch, Brown throws a knee and gets caught with an uppercut and is staggered. Derrick separates from the clinch and continues to throw punches to the head of Brown. Brown covers up well but then eats a couple big uppercuts and tries to clinch but ends up on his back with Lewis on top in full mount. Lewis lands some significant strikes on the ground but Brown gets up. Brown gets some composure back but ends up eating a big right hand from Lewis and falling to the ground, then Lewis gets on top and punches Brown to the finish 3:12 in the second round.

One thing I didn't like about the main event was the refereeing. When Brown went down he wasn't defending intelligently but still conscious. The ref waited until Lewis knocked him out then he landed two more very big shots. I really don't like seeing guys taking more damage than they have to. When the guy is clearly getting hit and not reacting well, just stop it, don't wait till the guy goes completely out. That's what they are there for.

In the co-main event Johny Hendricks won a three round decision against Hector Lombard in surprising fashion. I thought Lombard was going to get this one. But if I thought Johny was going to win, it would be by wrestling and grinding him out all three rounds but Johny showed off his striking in this fight by countering a lot of Lombard's punches and throwing a counter knee that landed multiple times during the fight. So Johny looked impressive going up a weight class and I hope he stays there.

My score for this fight was 29-28 for Johny Hendricks

Sam Sicilia lost a three round decision to the debuting Gavin Tucker. Gavin looked very impressive and calm in his first UFC fight. Gavin fought in his home town of Halifax Nova Scotia with a proud crowd behind him every second of the fight. Tucker came out fighting like the style of bantamweight champion Cody Garberant but with more head and leg kicks. Sam came out a little more aggressive in the third round but still not enough for the faster Gavin Tucker

My score for this fight was 30-27 for Gavin Tucker.

Elias Theodorou won a decision over Cezar Ferreira in a lack luster performance missing most of his strikes. Ferreira to me was the more effective striker and got Theodorou's back twice during the fight. One judge evan gave Elias a 30-27.

My score for this fight was 29-28 for Ferreira.

Sera Mcmann submitted Gina Mizany with a head and arm choke 74 seconds in the first round. As I said before this fight, Mcmann is light years ahead of her on the ground and would dominate as she did.

Paul Felder won by TKO in the first round by breaking Alessandro Ricci's nose with a standing elbow. Ricci was landing more than I thought but Felder won in dominant fashion.

Well, that turned out to be a pretty fun night. The UFC Halifax card looked pretty thin, but a wave of finishes made the card much more exciting and hopfully the UFC will return to Canada more often.
